5 Steps to avoiding that “Overwhelmed” Feeling

Have you ever felt like you have so much to do you don’t know where to begin?

Of course you haven’t! Hahaha.

Seriously, this has become a real problem in our society, and as an internet marketer,
it presents a unique set of circumstances, because our businesses are a 24/7 operation.

If you don’t know how to “Shut down”, you could easily spend 15 hours a day looking
at your computer screen (Not that I have EVER done that)…..or, on the flip side,
you could find yourself spending less and less time on your business, and the longer
you stay away, the harder it is to put yourself back in that frame of mind to be productive.

I recently have found myself in that position, and I wanted to share with you some
of the techniques I used to put myself “back in the game”….These may seem overly simple,
but, sometimes, it’s all you need to renew your spirit and remind yourself why you love what
you do.

1.) Speed Watching?
In this world of ever-evolving technology, we seem to be glued to our computer. Obviously.
But have you ever stopped to think about how much time we spend reading articles and books,
and watching videos? You Tube, Blogs, WEBINARS (How many of these did you sign up for, then
not show up, thinking “I’ll catch the recording later” only to find that you are so far behind you can’t
even make time to do that?) I recently was introduced to a product that I think is brilliant. I am not
an affiliate, just a fan. it will let you watch videos at faster speed, so you can get through them in a
fraction of the time….don’t worry, there’s no “Mickey Mouse” voice or anything like that, and you can
slow down the speed when you find an important point you want to write down. Enounce.com
I am hooked. I will never watch a video at regular speed again.

2.) Outsourcing.
We’ve all heard of it, but for some reason, we think it’s only for the “established”
entrepreneur, or those with deep pockets. Let me share a secret with you….much of my outsourcing is
done by an 18 year old kid with a love for $20 bills. That’s right, I am exploiting the needs of my son by
offering him (*gasp*) money to do some chores around the house. dishes, laundry, vacuuming, mowing the
lawn…basically whatever is needed. Now I can concentrate on money PRODUCING activities, like this blog post,
and when I am done, I will leave my home office and step into a semi clean house. (he’s not a professional,
let’s just be clear about that. Far from it!). But now he has some extra $$$ for gas in the car, and I
am less likely to start crying at the sight of my sink full of dishes. Win Win.

Of course for those tasks that require a bit more expertise, I can say
replacemyself.com comes highly recommended as does elance.com

I realize these cost money, but there is a trade off here, and I don’t know about you, but
my sanity is worth ALOT. Even if the budget is tight, there are things, such as article writing,
you can outsource very inexpensively that will allow you so much more productivity you’ll wonder how you
ever lived with out.

3.) You Deserve A Break Today.
Really. I don’t just mean get up from your computer, I mean you must mentally
detach yourself from your work. I had a really hard time with this in the beginning, and even now, sometimes I
go to bed with my mind thinking about what I can do “tomorrow”. Live in the moment, because we only have
so many moments to live. When you work, work hard…don’t allow your focus to be distracted by personal
phone calls or neighbors popping by (which for me is easy because I think I alienated everyone in my actual life
who isn’t a close friend or family!). But when you are not working, you must consciously decide to not think
about work. It isn’t hard once you develop this imperative habit.

4.) Breathe, Dammit!
As cliche as it may sound, yoga and deep breathing excercises can be extremely beneficial on so many
levels. For one, it helps to clear the clutter from your mind. For another, it will go a long way to lowering your
blood pressure so that you can deal with the stress this business puts on you. Cause face it, we can’t avoid
stressful situations, but we can control how we react to them. Being in a healthy state of mind will allow you
to think more rationally and make better, more clear, decisions during the day. Speaking of health, your diet
is also a factor here, folks. If you are eating poorly, chances are your body is pretty angry with you….and it
will tell you all day long. Those stomach pains, indigestion and heartburn will do more to distract you than
you may think. Eat light, eat often….and drink plenty of water. These few things will allow your body to function more regularly and peacefully so you can concentrate on more important matters, like that Ning page you’ve been
wanting to customize because you were told it would boost your credibility….(Ok, that’s a personal hang up, I admit)

5.) Get Your Mind Out Of The Gutter!
This one is so obvious, but, again, it seems to take time away from
other things, that we just don’t seem to spend enough time on Mindset and personal development. If you
are showing up everyday and your thoughts are jumbled and you are cursing yourself for what you didn’t
get done yesterday, you have already put yourself in a hole before your day even begins. If you just CANNOT
find time to read first thing, you should at least do one of these alternatives. Watch a 3-10 minute video.
Who rocks in your world? Tony Robbins? Jonathan Budd? (well, you may need more than 10 minutes for him,
because I’ve never seen him with just a “quick tip for the day” hahaha). Is it someone like Jim Rohn who inspires
you to do better and feel better? whoever that may be, YouTube has a video for it, I’m sure. You can also download
some great audio and play it while you are showering….whatever works for your schedule, just make sure you
start your day with a power boost of inspirational words and encouragement. I personally subscribe to Brian Tracy’s
newsletters, including his quote of the day…it’s quick to read and I always get started feeling great.
You can find more at BrianTracy.com

These are just some of the ways that you can get yourself out of the funk you may find yourself in from time to time,
as we all do for different reasons. If you want more information on how you can get rid of your overwhelmed lifestyle

  • This is exactly what I needed today Theresa. .A Break! You pointed out some great points as far as detaching, disconnecting, taking a real break.. And breathing!

Exactly what I needed to read today. I wrote on my blog today about how I was feeling so overwhelmed with all the marketing I needed to do in addition to illustrating and making my Zazzle products . . . . and then I found your link on Twitter - thank you for reminding me that I´m only human and that everyone gets overwhelmed from time to time . . . . . and that there are ways of dealing with it.
  • Great post. There are many days I feel overwhelmed and have to stop to breath. I love the boost of inspiration to start my day off right! Thank you for sharing.

Theresa great post! I just found Enounce myself and I absolutely love it! I have also used outsourcing a fair amount with my business - definitely a must especially for those technical things you just don't have time to figure out on your own. I love doing it, I just don't have time to do everything. I also love listening to something uplifting and encouraging. Tony Robbins is awesome as well as many other things you can listen to to learn more about what you are doing. I always have something educational or uplifting in my car so when I am driving I can pop it in my cd player. Thanks for sharing these things - great information!
  • These are really wonderful tips and I can honestly say that I don't take advantage of these strategies nearly enough. It is so easy to get overwhelmed and simply quit, and it takes much more work to find ways of overcoming our stress. However, in order to get anything done, overcoming is a very important task.

Thanks for the wonderful post and I look forward to coming back to read more.

  • This is a really helpful blog post. Awesome is really the right word. Five hard-hitting points that I know I can use. First of all, the Enounce thing is spectacular. I checked it out and ordered it immediately. Holy cow that's going to save me some time! Then the whole outsource thing. Just think how many repetitive things we all do to operate an online business, things that we could easily delegate if we had someone to delegate to. I've certainly heard of ELance, but not ReplaceMyself.com. Excellent idea and cheap. I won't go through all 5 but I've got to admit that the break idea is spot-on. I may as well get a pillow and blanket for my office, because except for eating and sleeping I'm always here. Thanks for the reminder to get away and clear the deck of all thoughts about business. A fresh mind is a tremendous competitive advantage! Great blog post.

I so love your style of writing :) And wow "speed watching" that sounds...
    I don't know what!
But I might have to try it!

What really helps to rejuvenate me is when I get around things and people I love and to just fall away into the moment.
  • Theresa,
Great post on balancing your life between what's important and not. We have to slow down and appreciate the moments in life, live them, not just watch them.
    Thanks,
    Val
  • thanks for this. i was definitely feeling overwhelmed.

    good and strong post.

    That mindset is certainly needed.

Jeffrey combs suggested something like that in our training. Basically breathing and thinking with positive afffirmations about what you would be comfortable with achieving to make that become a reality.

Frustrated marketers are everywhere trying to obtain the best mindset and you are a motivational person to help do so.

This is a great post Theresa! You're so talented in your writing skills and the way you express yourself. You write from your heart. Thank you for sharing all of these great ideas too!

Something I've been doing for the last couple of weeks is: the night before, write down (two mission critical task's) that I want to accomplish. The next day I unplug from everything else until I get those two things done.

The two mission critical task's should be something thats going to make you happy, productive, and pay you.

    You are a success!
  • That was a great post Theresa. I really liked the part about outsoursing. That is something that I feel so many people that are new to the business world miss (I know I did). But it is really impotant and can save so much time and energy plus, you normally get a better result when you hire an expert.
    Will be tweeting this out.

  • I am really feeling this blog! We must outsource as much as we can for starters. And yes, I think we all have had that eyeball on the screen too long, so we have to spend a few dollars to make things more simple.
The internet marketing business always has new things to learn and how can we ever really keep up. It turns into a funk indeed. I found myself there once and then restructured my time. Now it works. Thanks for this wonderful post.
